Reading through that Brosengae book, I think that Id restructure it some, take out the fencing schools (since Brosengae doesnt appear particularly Brecht), make one of the main sources of income fishing, since 1/3 of the population worship Nesirie, etc. Brosengae is a naval power in my opinion, being stuck with allies as their neighbors thats the only way they can shine through. Besides theyd need someone to hunt the pirates that make the Straits dangerous.

You can. Salt. “Stockfisch”?

However the natural customer for Brosengaes fishermen would be the

Imperial City just across the Arnienbae with a HUGE demand for foodstuff.

Does fishing produce much in the way of income though? You can’t exactly export fish to other nations, and there aren’t a lot of products that come from fish that can be put on a caravan or ship and traded in other lands.

Fish can make money they used to make a lot for the island I come from. Regularly traded items include salted fish(sun dried fish), fish oil (whale oil, different qualitys for different uses including lamps), Ivory (whale bone etc). Whale item were the most important.

these were the main ones and around 2000 ships used to visit the islands every year they wouldn’t do that if their wasn’t money to be made.

For Aerenwe:

The Rangers of the Erebannien should be Lilian’s military cohort IMO, and might be more like 2-3 companies of Veteran Scout Irregulars with Toughness (4 GB) - using the 3.0 BRCS military system, at least.

That is certainly possible, representing those who originally supported her during her rise to power.

What would be the rest of Aerenwe’s military do you think?
I would suggest 1 unit of Knights, potentially by the ETN. Some marines for their relatively large navy and for the northern swamplands, some pikes for the flat lands of the north and the rest a steady mix of irregulars and scouts.

Fish was an important comodity in Europe throughout the middle ages and

beyond. Norawy produced vast quatities of dried fish (a simple and

effecive way to conserve it) that was exported to the continent. So yes,

I`d say that Taeghas could indeed has fish exports as a major source of

income - Indeed I`d say that if Taeghas have any trade routes running

from it, then they could well represent fish exports.

Hmmm…I’ve re-read the description of Aerenwe in RoE, and they mention that the Rangers of the Erebannien are only “a band of the Queen’s finest rangers.” Which sounds rather small, so I’d have to revise my earlier statement about 2-3 bands. Also, I got their unit price wrong (they’re a 5 GB unit, not 4).
Here’s a possible army list for Aerenwe:

1 Rangers of the Erebannien* (VLIrr, Scout, Tough) (5 GB)
1 Swords of Aerenwe* (VHC) (6 GB)
1 Elite Infantry (VHI) (4 GB)
1 Infantry (RMI) (2 GB)
2 Pikemen (RMP) (2 GB)
2 Elite Archers (VLA, +Missile) (4 GB)
1 Scouts (RLIrr, Scout) (3 GB)
2 Marines (RLIrr, Marine) (3 GB)
11 companies, costing 8-1/4 GB per season garrisoned

In time of need, Lilian can call on the able folk of Aerenwe to fight. Aerenwe levies are treated as Regular Light Irregulars (rather than Green and unarmored). Also, a number of veteran adventurers will also come to her aid. Up to 3 bands may be formed, each of which is an EL 10 Hero Unit.

This is a decent little army, but I imagine Lilian is pretty serious about maintaining Aerenwe’s sovereignty from threats like Osoerde or Khinasi raiders. Given the focus on rangers, I’ve always imagined that Aerenwe is renowned for her hunters and foresters, making for a pool of exceptional archers to defend Aerenwe’s borders (hence the 2 elite archers). A bit of a Robin Hoodish place is Aerenwe and the Erebannien. :wink:

ETN might have some paladins to lend, though I doubt they’d have the numbers to muster more than one unit. It would be elite, though, perhpas like this:
Paladins of Neserie* (ETN): VHI, Marine, +Defense (6 GB), led by the champions of the ETN (EL 10 Hero Unit).

If Aerenwe’s army roster is too expensive, then have the ETN take over the 2 Marines. This might represent the ETN being the main defenders of Aerenwe’s ships and coastal waters, the other marines being faithful warriors or paladin intitiates. ETN might also contribute to the maintenance of the warships for the same reason.

UNIT KEY:
*military cohort (1/2 maintenance)
Unit Designations:
1st letter, Unit Experience: V, R, G = Veteran, Regular, or Green
2nd letter, Armor: H, M, L = Heavy, Medium, or Light
3rd letter, Unit Type:
C = Cavalry
I = Infantry
Irr = Irregulars
P = Pikes
A = Archers
Art = Artillerists
4th part, Special Training (Scout, Tough, +Melee, etc.)

ex.: Anuirean “Elite Infantry” are VHI, or Veteran Heavy Infantry

Given the focus on rangers, I’ve always imagined that Aerenwe is renowned for her hunters and foresters, making for a pool of exceptional archers to defend Aerenwe’s borders (hence the 2 elite archers). A bit of a Robin Hoodish place is Aerenwe and the Erebannien. :wink:

I have similiar feelings about Aerenwe.
Why Ancient Forest Erebannien is NOT a druids (Aeric) sancturay?
Why godness of the sea is almost only religion in forest?

Maybe Erebannien yews are perfect to make longbows and Aerenwe is famous for finest longbowmen in the world and export this weapon to allied realms.

About Aerenwe file of Ian Hoskins.

I have a question about demographics.
It is said, Aerenwe Population is 227,000.
It’s ok by the medieval standards.
But anyway in the Ruins of Empire is said Anuire is a 4 milion nation.
(Another) anyway: in Rulebook it’s said, that province has 1000-1500 square miles and population of:
lev 0 - below 1000
lev. 1 - 2000-10000
lev. 4-6 - 10000-40000,
so Aerenwe has (maximize) population of 161000.
And finaly a question: what method of counting are You using?

I’ve posted the information about the population levels and how I came up with each realm’s population. Take a look at that post, it should answer your questions.

I like the armies that realms started with in the Gorgon’s Alliance. Aerenwe merely had a Unit of Elite Infantry stationed in Calrie, the royal guard persay and a unit of Irregulars (militia) in Dhoenel.

The Fortress at Calrie is a deterent that I believe Osoerde, Aerenwe’s only real threat, would not be able to easily overcome. Perhaps make the garrison two units of elite infantry and an archer as the garrison. Put a unit of irregulars in Halried, a unit or 2 of scouts/irregulars to cover the Rangers of the Ere. and an advanced levy rule like Osprey recommended.

I was the one who wrote the Brosengae secrets book and it was done at the time as a player aid for adventures run in the birthright campaign.

The fencing styles were invented as brosengae is a naval power and probably has had a fair amount of contact with the brechts couple this with the light armour necessary for sailing ( or at least not drowning ) and the inference that brosengae tries to be the height of fashion. I thought the natural evolution was for the brosens to have developed fencing.

The fishing income is a great idea and I will attempt to update into the correct format for the atlas but alas I can’t give a time frame though.

If anyone has ideas about a history for brosengae it would be good, I assume at one stage that brosengae held a lot more land than it does now.

I am open to ideas to complete the secrets.

Richard

I have written some history for Brosengae and it’s posted in another thread. I was about to adjust it a bit. Some minor adjustments in the middle and the start has to be rewritten. If you’re doing the Secrets, then that’s fine with me. :slight_smile:

As for Brosengae once being larger, then I believe that to be true, since they (by being a duchy, while Taeghas has a count as ruler) were once the ruling house of Taeghas, before the split. Brosien is definitely the former seat of the Brosen family before they became Mierelen, otherwise why the name?

The Iron Throne lists Brosengae as a Border nation and Taeghas as a duchy. From its map, it does appear as though Brosien was part of Brosengae. Also, inside the book, the ruler of Taeghas is referred to as Count and that of Brosengae as Duke.

Kinda messy, no?

I would make a slight modification to the list provided by Osprey and remove both instances of Infantry (and maybe even the archers) and replace them with a smaller number of irregulars. Aerenwe is a neutral realm, and such in theory needs not a large standing army. However, the ability to conscript irregulars rather than levies would more then make up for it.

Aerenwe is a neutral realm, and such in theory needs not a large standing army. However, the ability to conscript irregulars rather than levies would more then make up for it.

Well, there’s a few good reasons I beefed up Aerenwe’s army: one is that Lilian Swordwraith personally led a coup against the last king, and I imagine it was a full-on civil war. Plus she is a hardened warrior of many personal battles. Such a person would see their freedom as something that was fought for and won, and thus something that must be fiercely protected.

Aerenwe may be officially neutral, but Lilian is sympathetic to Roesone and probably unfriendly with Jaison Raenech. He is a known tyrant who impales his own subjects while hunting down the rightful heir…who would trust such a ruthless and ambitious regent on their borders? Not to mention the southern swamp mage remaining a constant threat just across the river.

So all in all I expect there’s a strong castle in Calrie with a strong garrison ensuring that Raenech doesn’t turn his gaze south looking for easy pickings.

All that said, though, I think irregulars could fill in well enough for garrison duty, especially if it’s a couple of veteran units (from the wars, you know). Also, let’s say ETN will take over the support of the 2 marine companies. Hmm, how about like this?

2 Rangers of the Erebannien* (VLIrr, Scout, Tough) (5 GB)
2 Elite Irregulars (VLIrr, Tough) (4 GB)
2 Elite Archers (VLA, +Missile) (4 GB)
2 Pikemen (RMP) (2 GB)
2 Marines (RLIrr, Marine) (ETN)

10 companies, costing 6 GB per season garrisoned

That new number looks pretty good coupled with the idea of giving Aerenwe the ability to call upon Hero units and the irregular levy. Although I would suggest the irregulars levied freely be only applicable from the forested provinces of the Erebannien. As Osprey pointed out, the number of rangers is small so it might reflect how the rangers are able to rally the populace to protect the forest. Aerenwe only needs 1 set of scouts garrisoned in Calrie to watch for most threats

One question – how long ago did Lilian overthrow the tyrant? If it’s been a decade or more, then the Infantry would have likely been disbanded in the intervening years…

Lilliene overthrew the tyrant some 50 years ago.

I don’t know if this matters or not… but I’ve got some input as one of the main authors involved with writing up Aerenwe. I made some edits to the doc that I had never gotten around to sending Raesene… primarily, I renamed Reynard Gavril (the tyrant) to Saleth Gavril. Giving credit where credit is due, I took the name Saleth from Solmyr’s Anuirean timeline and incorporated into my own timeline for my PBEM.

I had also added the following plot:

GHOSTS OF THE PAST:
Lately, the Queen has been assaulted in her dreams by a series of terrible nightmares. In these dreams, the deposed and slain tyrant Saleth taunts Liliene by labelling everything she has accomplished a failure that will be destroyed upon her death. Liliene has begun to suspect that these nightmares are more than just dreams and that, somehow, some part of Saleth may have survived. Though she has yet to share these suspicions with anyone else, she grows more worried with each passing day. Her suspicions are more right than she knows.
In his life, King Saleth Gavril was secretly a powerful wizard. Upon his death, he was able to transfer a part of his life force into the sword that killed him; Wraith. It has taken nearly fifty years for Saleth’s spirit to strengthen to the point where it is now able to invade the mind of whoever carries the sword. Slowly, but surely, Saleth is corrupting Liliene Swordwraith’s mind in the hopes of one day effecting total control over her and perhaps even regaining physical form.

I like this idea very much.
I will use it our campaign. Thx.

It’s 1575. Liliana has died 1541, but the sword is lurking throuhg Erebannien 'till today.

Welcome to the Erebannien :slight_smile:
